I believe that William Arthur Bird ,born 1865, worked for the Black
Prince before moving to Oxfordshire in the early 20th cent.
Arthur William, born 1895, became a Police Superintendent in Oxon.
Hi Lynn,
Welcome to the site and thanks for posting such interesting information. Yes it would seem there is definitely a link there. William Bird is the brother of my fourth great-grandfather George Bird. I extracted the information on their parents, Benjamin (a sheperd) and Ann from the Barnham parish registers. I believe that Bejamin and Ann were born in Buxhall in Suffolk, but records on them are few and far between.
Please excuse my ignorance; could you elaborate on your intriguing statement about William Arthur Bird working for the Black Prince? The only Black Prince I can think of is prince Edward and I think that was the 14th century, so I'm probably way off there!
Hello, I am new to this game, but finding the Bird name and now ,rec. your reply is exciting!
The Black Prince,or Prince Duleep Singh, bought Elvedon Hall in 1863. He was an Indian Marharajah who the Brits had ejected from the throne of the Punjab. He had a pension from the civil list. My Grandfather told me that the Prince was a good cricketer.Lord Iveagh purchased the hall after the Princes death.
Thanks for clearing that up for me Lynn, some very interesting historical information that I'll try to look into further. Interesting to note that Arthur William joined the police force, a career chosen by quite a few Bird descendants. Smile
